The Kitchen: The Heart of the Home
The kitchen has evolved far beyond a closed-off space with a pass-through—it’s now truly the "Heart of the Home." Since the open-concept architectural movement of the '90s, kitchens have expanded dramatically, often taking over the family room and patio area and sometimes even replacing the traditional living and dining rooms.
Today's kitchens are designed with functionality and style in mind, featuring larger dining tables, peninsulas adorned with pendant lighting, and a wide variety of range hoods. Glass cabinet doors with interior lighting add an elegant touch, and of course, the dream of having a spacious kitchen island with seating has become a must-have.
When it comes to selecting materials for countertops, the options can feel overwhelming. Back in the '90s, solid cherrywood cabinets paired with a tumbled marble backsplash were all the rage. For the bold, a picture-framed accent tile added a unique touch.
Granite countertops reigned supreme, with popular choices like Black Galaxy, Baltic Brown, and my favorite. The sparkling dark green Uba Tuba and cherry wood cabinetry created a striking yet balanced look that I loved incorporating into kitchen designs.
Today, kitchen design continues to evolve, but the heart and soul of this space remain the same—bringing people together in a warm, functional, and stylish environment.

Today, countertops and backsplashes have become true works of art in kitchen design. There are endless possibilities, from laser-cut backsplashes to natural stone with exotic colors and patterns and even bold fabricated surfaces with sparkle. One of my newest design inspirations is quartz countertops for their stunning color range and their ability to be backlit.
The potential to highlight key features and create ambiance in the kitchen is truly exciting!

Below, you can see how I’ve incorporated laser-cut tiles, LED-backlit Blue Agate, and Vetrazzo Quartz countertops into this stunning kitchen remodel. Combining these elements brings a vibrant and artistic energy to the space, blending modern innovation with natural beauty for a truly unique and sophisticated look.
When planning your home remodel and kitchen design, having an interior designer by your side is an invaluable asset. Together, we’ll explore your kitchen design style and present options, from custom kitchen cabinets to production cabinetry, to determine what works best for your kitchen remodel.
A complete kitchen design goes beyond cabinets. We’ll consider everything from color palettes, room accents, and lighting to ceiling treatments, flooring, seating and fabrics, and window treatments. Your new kitchen should be tailored to meet your family’s lifestyle and entertaining needs, ensuring beauty and functionality.
Most importantly, your kitchen remodel needs to reflect your personality while harmonizing with the architecture of your home.
When visiting a kitchen remodeling showroom, it’s important to be aware of a few limitations:
Limited Product Range: The salesperson works for that showroom, meaning they can only offer the products they sell, which may limit your kitchen design options.
Focus on Sales, Not Customization: Their primary goal is to sell their cabinet lines, and custom kitchen cabinets are often unavailable. While they may offer some backsplash or countertop options, they will unlikely provide a wide selection, especially of quartz countertops.
Showrooms typically focus on cabinetry, countertops, and backsplashes without considering essential design elements like wall or ceiling treatments, flooring options, furniture, fabrics, or how everything coordinates with the rest of your home or lifestyle.
When my clients and I consider the architecture for their kitchen remodel, I focus on achieving a perfect balance between function and beauty. The kitchen design should feel like a natural extension of the rest of the living space, resulting in a cohesive and inviting environment.
